Prathap: So my next question is like in the process of becoming a fire fighter did you ever worry about your life, like there is always of something happening right
Mr. Sowerby: Oh… Uhmm one thing about fire academy training is that, what they really drill into your mind, it to never, never put your life into risk, it’s a big part of it, like if something happens the family can sue the fire department, so when your training firefighters don’t just run into a burning building right.
Prathap: Well yeah they have to plan ahead and know what they’re getting into right?
Mr. Sowerby: Oh yeah totally, like if there is a risk of a building falling apart like they’ll pull you out sort of thing right, I mean obviously it’s a high risk job but there are a lot of precautions taken into effect to make it safe as possible. But know I never really felt like I was in danger or anything like that during my firefighter training, cause I never actually deployed anywhere.
Corbett: I was a BC forest fire fire for 4 years I did this prior, before becoming a teacher I was part of a IA ( Initial attack crew) we specialize in getting rid of fires quickly, we would usually fly to our destinations in packs of 3.
Akash: Was this something like a last minute decision are was it like a job you always hoped of getting?
Corbett: This was my ideal job that I wanted for once I finished high school, because I didn’t want to go to University well cause it’s quite expensive obviously. So I just looked into the best seasonal jobs there are available. And wild firefighting came up as an option, I also have friends that were in the field so I knew quite a bit about it through them, but it’s great because it’s a seasonal job I would only work for four months.
Fernando: Were you like deployed somewhere?
Corbett: Well it’s based on one thing, I was deployed in Williams lake, which is where I grew up as well, so I was kinda lucky, but you can be deployed anywhere, Vancouver, Kamloops are wherever you’re needed
Akash: You said it was something you and your friend’s did together right?
Corbett: Yeah two of my friends started a couple years before I’d started
Fernando: So you knew a group of people like before hand?
Corbett: Yeah, but I didn’t like really click with them, but yeah you could be put out anywhere in the world.
Fernando: Oh, so you could be put like anywhere in the world?
Corbett: Yeah, like once you finish basic training, the government asks you where you would like to go, and you know you get to put down like your places you would like to go, but ultimately it’s the governments say on where you get to go.
Akash: When did you begin and when did you end?
Corbett: So I began in summer of 2014, 2014 was my first season and I finished in the fall of 2018?
Akash: Oh so it’s only like a summer thing?
Corbette: Oh, well you can be deployed all year long, but there is a bunch seasonal employees. Our position is for people that are only going to work 4-6 months, and thats perfect for like my because I was in University.
Akash; Did you have the same crew every same year or not?
Corbett: Well turnover is the amount of people that actually come back, because it’s such an extreme job, it’s usually younger people because you also have to be fairly fit to qualify.
Fernando: So if there were to be an earthquake would you be deployed?
Corbett: So yeah as a government resource, we would kinda just do their bidding, because fire is out specialty.which is the disaster relief we respond to most, in my career I’ve only been deployed to a flood, but if there were a earthquake i’m sure we would have been deployed for that as well.
Akash: In the recent years the only natural disasters we’ve gotten were just forest fires, what are your thoughts on emergency services combating other natural disasters the main one being earthquakes
Corbett: Like i feel it’s a hard thing to predict, but if it’s anything similar to what I’ve experienced, as like a first responder to like natural disasters. It’s not really something you can like prep for, especially if you don’t have any experience, the only way you can get good at knowing how a natural disaster is going to play out, it by you know actually going out and seeing them in person and seeing how it plays out, so we don’t have that luxury with earthquakes, like I’ve never seen one my self, I don;t really know how much people really need to know.
Fernando: On a scale from 1 to 10, how prepared are you if an earthquake strikes right now

Fernando: Oh so do you not know a lot about earthquakes?
Mother: I do but I just don’t really know how to prepare for them.
Son: What do you call prepared?
Fernando: Like if you were at home and one were to happen, would you know how to react.
Mother: No I don’t, I would just panic.
Fernando: Do you know about the big one we’re supposed to get.
Mother: Yes, actually my daughter was telling me about it a while ago so I know about it, but not too much.
Son: Yeah, but I would give a 2, does that solve your problem?
Fernando and Prathap: Yes, thank you

Fernando: Well that’s good can you go a little bit more in depth
Jack: Well just a little here and there, reading and stocking up on spare food, also my daughters school i’m pretty sure teaches her about how to prepare for one and how to react and stocking.

Linda: Well nobody is perfect, and I went to the training so I would say 5 or 6.
Fernando: I would say higher to be honest, your the first person we’ve met that went out of their way to go and prepare for an earthquake.
Linda: Yeah I mean well it’s very important because if m going to live in Canada i’m going to need to know about the risks that come with it, and how I can protect myself.
Fernando: Yeah of course

Spencer: Well i’m a nurse, so i’m not that to knowledgeable on earthquakes, but I do try and go over emergency routines with my family, I do it with my kids as well so it show’s that I care as well, because if parents do something kids are they’re more likely to do the same. So I would count to 60 with them and everything, we also have a little map on our fridge, and they know how to safely get to our garage for food.
Prathap: Wow that’s actually really good, you’re one of the few people we’ve interviewed that really went out of their way to prepare for one.
Fernando: So from a scale from 1 to 10 how prepared do you think you are?
Spencer: Um I would say 9, because there’s always room for improvement right, but i’m confident my family and I would do fine in an earthquake?

P: If I may ask you Darrel, how is it commanding a fire brigade?
D: It’s a dream to tell you the truth, I love my job but sometimes it can be extremely stressful.
F: Can you give us examples please?
D: Of course, but this can be subject of which it can be hard to take in information.
A: Of course, if you need a while just relax you’re more welcome to Darrel.
D: That won’t be necessary I’ll be fine. Well, one of them, actually not one of the heaviest and stressful worries I have is the absolute safety of my firefighters, every day when they leave and I hear that siren, my heart just sinks.
It may be because I’ve had good friends pass, and just to add, what fires do to people is like something straight out of a movie.
L: Wow, just wow I didn’t know firemen carry such a heavy heart, I thank you for your service.
D: No need to thank me.
P: Another question we have is, have you lost anyone close?
D: “sigh” yes, I actually lost my brother last year the matter of a fact, although he’s not a fireman, his house burned to the ground while he was asleep, all that was left of him was she charcoal remains.
P: I feel deep sorrow, i’m sorry for your loss Darrel.
D: It’s okay, we all meet our time eventually you know.
F: Darrel, may we ask another question?
D: Of course.
P: How prepared are firefighters in the case of a natural disaster?
D: Well, after the fire that destroyed Fort McMurray, let’s just say we’ve gotten better, for example, we have more set more exercises for our firemen.
We may be working hard, but there’s always room for improvement.

P: What can you reccomend to people that are trying to prepare for a natural disaster?
D: Well there are many ways to prepare for the worst.
But in my opinion the best way to prepare for the worst it to have multiple plans. Because if you place all your bets on that one plan and it fails you can be in some very hot water.

Growing up as kids we may remember going to school and our teachers talking about the different natural disasters that happen around us. But something teachers haven’t really gone in-depth about is how they form. For example when Japan was hit by a tsunami in 2012 my teacher just talked about the number of people that died and how the government reacted.

In this segment we plan on talking about how some natural disaster has come to be. For example tornadoes, tsunami, volcanic eruptions. And at the end of each episode we will add images from trusted websites like weather channels and government websites to add a visual on how some natural disasters occur.
later on into the segment we’ll also debunk some common misconceptions people may have on natural disasters. We’ll also make ties with our other 2 segment ideas by using by adding on to how they may have formed.
Again like our “Current natural disasters’ segment we’ll talk about how many casualties and how great powers from the past dealt with such disasters, and also how people tried to stop such disasters from happening. We’ll also cover how modern society can learn from our ancestors’ mistakes.
In our blast to the past, sit back and enjoy as we take disasters that have wrecked the world we live on, all the way from the great Japanese Kanto Earthquake of 1923 to visiting Mexico and how the Mayans were plunged into a very dark time which happened before the Spanish conquest of South America.
How this segment works, is that whenever a natural disaster occurred, we’ll to the best of our ability to cover it right away with an episode.
We plan on talking about almost anything that may be related to a natural disaster, to even some diseases that may have spread ( some may say that counts as a natural disaster.
For example, if a volcano were to go off in New Zealand you can expect us to be in the process of creating an episode, talking about casualties and how the government is reacting to how the people of the area of which mother nature has unleashed her power are dealing the disaster.

Many people report having the sensation of having their heading pounding from the inside because of how fast their heart beats during a natural disaster
7. Tires screeching
This sound is supposed to represent people driving away in their vehicles to get to safety.
8. Raid horn
A raid horn is a very infamous sound attributed to with getting to safety
9. Waves crashing
With the rising ocean levels posing as an issue, tsunamis are a very serious issue many countries may have to face
10. Politicians speaking
Like any case in an natural disaster, politicians or people of power will be making some very important speeches, and messages.
With the rise of natural disaster, many countries are increasing their budget on disaster relief. With the fire in Australia, and the Eruption of a volcano in New Zealand, and Snow storms in east Canada, it make sense that people are focusing on their budgets, but just because we have money and have the resources, doesn’t mean we’re read.
“If you spend the first several hours of an activation trying to organize yourself, you are already behind,” Moreau said. “And that’s what the exercises and the training (do) … (They) make that transition as smooth as possible so you can immediately focus your effort on dealing with the problem rather than getting yourself organized.”
